West End Residences

Building A
Tied Back Soldier Pile & Lagging Rock Bolts

Shotcrete

Location: Boston, MA
Owner: Equity Residential
General Contractor: Turner Construction Company

Project Description:
The West End Residences project at Charles River Park consists of two separate tower structures with underground parking overlooking the Charles River Esplanade.

The larger of the two sites required the removal of over 30,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil and approximately 60,000 cubic yards of rock excavation. Prior to drilling and blasting the 35 foot deep Cambridge argillite rock, an earth support system was installed to retain the overburden soils. For this, we drilled and installed soldier piles through the soil and fifteen to twenty feet into the rock and installed lagging.  Upper level tiebacks were then drilled into the rock and the face of the weathered rock below the lagging was stabilized with rock dowels and shotcrete facing.

The building closer to the Charles River required a braced sheetpile cofferdam for the approximately 24,000 cubic yards of excavation. The bracing consisted of an upper level of cross lot and corner struts and a lower level of tiebacks and rakers. One corner of the sheetpiles was driven into the weathered bedrock.
